Good idea for a thread Jane

This is a handy site if anyone has mobility issues to see how accessible attractions/venues are

http://www.disabledgo.com/

Also worth npting is that ATOC (Association of Train Operating Companies) (nothing to do with a similarly named evil corporation) have launched a new site to offer help and advice for older and disabled passengers traveling by rail. You can find the new site at

http://www.railtravelmadeeasy.co.uk/index.html

Hope this is of use :)

LOL BigGrin LOL Hi Joanne

I had an idea on the way home from a day out at roman villa Cirencester way - that we/NRAS could do with a folder for ideas like yours, "customer" (us)! If we could share our experience as well on visiting somewhere disability friendly for example.
.......Or places best to avoid like mountain climbing (I mean not suitable for me)!!!

Let's pool our ideas together, show newbies we can all have fun!

National trust roman villa was easy terrain for me with two sticks, plenty of new benches to stop and admire the site.
There is an undercover part covering the mosaic part with suspended secure walk way (you look down at the roman tiles). Accessed via 8 steps or a little see through lift.
I would say a couple of hours visit - not enough for a whole day.
To get there is via a singe windy road.

Disabled parking for four cars.

Cafe - only pre pack sarnies, hot/cold drinks, cake
Indoor seating or outdoor picnic tables up 4 steps.

i had a wonderful day out yesterday .. one i didn't think would be possible.

we live about 20 minutes from Woburn Abbey and there is a beautiful golf course nearby which has three courses.

i love watching golf ( don't play but Hubby does )

there was a Senior Masters Championship on over 4 days and we had tickets. i have bad Osteo in both knee's and therefore can't walk distances .. so my hubby usually pushes me in a wheelchair. but knew we couldn't do that on this golf course with rough paths and terrain.

so the Golf Club put me onto Events Mobility who hire out mobility scooters for £20 a day and i had a really lovely day, could get to where we wanted to go and see so much and left my hubby free to wander beside me.

had a wonderful lunch there and saw some great players like Sam Torrance, Mark James.

i must admit by the end of the day my lower backed ached as did my shoulders but it was worth it.

i think they hire scooters out at many events, so it's worth looking into.

hi, i went out with friends on the waveney stardust river cruise from beccles in suffolk and had a lovely time just going about the broads, the 2 skippers were lovely and so charming full of information and stories for landluvvers,we had hot/cold drinks and biscuits, some of us had taken our own packed lunch, very clean and spacey toilet, the boat had a chair lift, stairs and a ramp so it was easy to get on and off,the men did however make sure we all had a hand of help, i think they also go from south walsham in norfolk,i didnt organise the trip so not sure how to contact but i reckon if googled then job done, well worth the day out, lots of free parking also, dorothy

Smile just visited Imber village on Salisbury plain. The government ordered villagers to vacate their homes many years ago, so forces could practice their fighting before they went to war. Salisbury plain is still used for army training to this day, miles and miles of countryside.

We went there today, empy shells of cottages, and the old village church, the village is only open to the public several times a year.

Here's a link from the bbc if anyone interested in going in the future.

Smile ThumpUp Thank you Sylvia
I will have a read of your secret villages link this afternoon.
You are really thoughtful!

I forgot to mention yesterday after visiting Imber, we stopped off at supermarket....as my husband pulled away, people were shouting for us to stop....he got a flat tyre! He couldn't get the tyre off so spent a few hours in waitrose carpark waiting got the aa to help us out!

It was fun driving over Salisbury plain to and from Imber!!

Smile hello everyone!

We are off to the nec at the weekend for the caravan and motorhome show, been before and enjoyed walking the great lengths of the nec to all the stands and new motorhomes and caravans for my daughter to check out!! She likes opening all the cupboards, testing the seats, and has a thing for checking out the new bathrooms!

This year will be different, I don't think I can walk far (shall give it a go) I looked on nec website, they hire scooters (yepieee) I've never tried one! I will see how I go.

The annoying thing though, is the stands claiming they can cure arthritis with vibrating chairs, beds, and dodgy dried leaves...........but there are vunerable people that waste their pennies.

Shall let you all know how it goes!

Hi Jane - hope you have a good time - I'll be thinking of you zooming around in your scooter. Agree about gullible people spending not just pennies but £100's - I tried a lovely vibrating seat with blow up bags that massaged my legs - felt good while I sat there but soooooo expensive, and obviously does not cure anything. I'll have to wait till I win the lottery then I'll happily join the ranks of the gullible!!!

ThumpUp just been to nec for motorhome and caravan show, I shuffled round with stick! Said to my husband I hire scooter if I needed to.....instead I walked.
Feet and knees stiff and aches, at least I'm sat for a few hours in the car.

Saw some pacer sticks, they looked rather nice! Shall read the pacer piece in the magazine.

Pleased to be sitting for a while!

Have enjoyed reading all these fun days out.
We decided to join the N.T. at the end of August and have had a very interesting few weeks already.
So far we have visited the food fare at Attingham Park in Shrewsbury, Powys castle in Welshpool, the apple festival in Erddig,Wrexham, seeing how cider was made and today we've been to Chirk Castle which originally was a castle but was later made into a very beautiful family home. Didn't realise how much of our coast line is also protected by the N.T. When on holiday in Pembrokeshire in Sept we visited Martins Haven and saw beautiful seal families with the cutest pups down below us in the coves.
I didn't know that so many different events go on in these places all through the year, or how many of the folk doing the work are just volunteers, particularly the brill. tour guides. There are usually wheelchairs available, and in some places scooters too. I use my scooter to get about in the garden and do my walking inside as much as I am able. We have found there are many seats around to stop and rest, both inside and out.
So glad we joined, we've already had our membership money back in just the places we've been to so far and it's fascinating to see into the lives of those who went before us, upstairs and downstairs.
Enjoy, its good to get out and about as much as you can.

Lovely shops, weather dry and nippy!

Normally we lunch at slug "n" lettuice, but the portions are so big....my daughter and I never eat everything.
So, we went to pizza express - first time for us all. Nice to do something naughty now and then. Had a pud - choc cake with icecream. May I say very scrummy! But I felt guilty and saved a bit for my hubby. LOL

Never do spinnaker tower (not cheap)!Sad
Took photos, put on twitter 2 share.
Quality time with my family.Love

i like Gun Wharf Keys in Portsmouth,

we have stayed a couple of times in a hotel at Hayling Island, so it's near.

when we go over to the Isle of Wight you can see Spinnaker Tower from a little old fashioned Cafe on the Harbour front ( it always reminds me of an Enid Blyton book the Famous Five .. lol ) where we go for an Ice Cream from there,

Glad to hear everyone is still getting out and about inspite of this c c c c old weather!!
We had a brill family day out yesterday at the West Mid safari park, with my two girls and all six grandchildren!
The animals were all wide awake and hungry, kids had a fab time on the rides, needless to say I just watched....
Even the journey there and back was fun, we all travelled in my daughters ford transit together, lots of chatter and singing.
Zena xxx looking forward to the next trip.....

BigGrin LOL Hi Suzanne & Zena

I shall look Hayling Island up on the computer over the weekend. Its amazing to see all the different size boats and ferries coming in and out of the harbour, my daughter wants us to venture over to Isle of Wight.
Brings back memories of when I was early teens and my nan and grandad took me over there on a hovercraft! I remember that it was hot, had icecream and the pretty seaside shops with sea shells outside for saleBigGrin

We picked a leaflet up with prices as foot passenger for the day on the ferry and unlimited bus around the Isle of Wight.

Made a boo boo at work the other day, did not know hovercrafts are no longer (ooohhh dear)! I've looked on online since to find a hovercraft museum that you can visit (I was more excited than my husband at my discovery!!! So that would be for another day!Blushing

Well done for a visit to the Zoo with all the grandchildren, amazing how much the temp has dropped and the wind biting on hands and faces. Glad you enjoyed, haven't been to a zoo in years.
We looked at a few zoos over the summer - didn't go to any because of pennies - not cheap!

Before ra, I'd always fancied lapland......I couldn't do the sledge/outdoor bits. Father christmas might call security for stalking him!!
